How can I get free groceries as a senior?
Older adults can get free groceries three ways at the same time: a food pantry today, a free monthly food box through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program if you are 60 or older and income-eligible, and a monthly grocery card through SNAP, which has easier rules after age 60.
What this means
- These stack. Taking a pantry bag does not reduce your SNAP amount and the senior food box is counted separately from both.
- SNAP is money on a card you swipe at the grocery store like a debit card. Nobody at the register can tell it apart from any other card.
- After 60 there is no work requirement, the application is shorter in most states, and your medical costs can be deducted to raise the amount you receive.
What to do first
- For food this week, dial 211 and ask for the nearest pantry and its hours. Many will deliver to homebound seniors.
- Apply for SNAP through your state agency and say you are over 60 so you get the simplified senior process.
- Ask your local Area Agency on Aging whether your county has the Commodity Supplemental Food Program senior box, which is about 30 pounds of shelf-stable food each month.
- In summer, ask about Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons for free fresh produce.
SNAP Food Benefits for Seniors

CSFP Senior Food Box
A free box of groceries every month, built for people 60 and older.
Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program
Coupons or a card for free fresh fruit and vegetables at farmers markets and farm stands.
What you'll need
- Photo identification and proof of address
- Proof of income for the last 30 days
- Receipts or statements for medical costs, which can increase your SNAP benefit after 60
- Your rent or mortgage and utility amounts
Where to go
- SNAP state directory: https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/state-directory — each state runs its own application, online or by phone.
- Dial 211 for pantries near you, including ones that deliver.
