What this program is, in plain English
The Commodity Supplemental Food Program gives people 60 and older a free box of food once a month. It is real groceries: canned fruit and vegetables, juice, cereal, rice or pasta, peanut butter, canned meat or fish, and cheese and shelf-stable milk. You either pick it up at a local site or, in many places, it is delivered. It is not a replacement for SNAP and you can have both at the same time. Some areas keep a waiting list because the number of boxes is fixed, so get your name down even if there is a wait.

How to apply
This program is run by State agencies and local food banks, funded by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. Most decisions take Same day at many sites; waiting lists exist in high-demand areas.
