How do I apply for SNAP if I am over 60?
You apply for SNAP through your own state's agency, not the federal government, and households with someone 60 or older follow simpler rules: a shorter application in most states, an interview that can be done entirely by phone, and no limit on how much of your income can come from Social Security.
What this means
- SNAP stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which used to be called food stamps. It puts money on a card you use at the grocery store.
- Households where everyone is 60 or older or has a disability are not subject to the gross income test that applies to other households, so they are measured on net income after deductions.
- You can deduct out-of-pocket medical costs above 35 dollars a month, which often raises the benefit substantially.
- Owning a home and a car does not disqualify you, and in most states retirement accounts are not counted.
