What this program is, in plain English
SNAP puts money on a card each month for groceries. California Department of Social Services runs it in California. If anyone in the household is 60 or older or has a disability, there is no gross income cap in the usual way and you can deduct out-of-pocket medical costs above $35 a month, which raises the benefit and is the single most missed step on the form. Bring receipts for prescriptions, doctor visits, dentures, hearing aids, glasses and transport to appointments. A household of one that is over 60 can apply with a shorter form in most states, and interviews are usually done by phone.
