What this program is, in plain English
When a bank account goes quiet, an insurance company cannot find you, a utility owes you a deposit back, or an old employer has a final paycheck you never cashed, that money is handed to your state after a few years. The state holds it forever and waits for you. There is one official free search site run by the state treasurers, and you should check every state you have ever lived in, plus your spouse's name and the names of parents whose estates you handled. Never pay a finder a percentage to do this. It is free and it takes five minutes.

Cash from forgotten accounts, uncashed checks, insurance payouts, refunds, and security deposits.
Who qualifies

How to apply
This program is run by State treasurer or unclaimed property office in each state. Most decisions take Two weeks to several months depending on the state and the size of the claim.
