What this program is, in plain English
The HealthWell Foundation is a national charity that pays the part of your medical costs your insurance does not. Each of its funds covers one condition, such as heart failure, diabetes, macular degeneration, or a particular cancer. When a fund is open you apply online or by phone, and if you are approved you get a set amount for the year that pays copays, coinsurance, deductibles, and sometimes your insurance premium or travel to treatment. Funds close when the money is gone and reopen without much warning, so check often.
What you actually get
A yearly grant amount, commonly between $1,500 and $15,000 depending on the fund, applied to copays, premiums, or treatment travel.
