What this program is, in plain English
Original Medicare does not pay for routine dental care, eyeglasses, or hearing aids, which is why so many older adults simply go without. There are four real routes. Donated Dental Services, run by the Dental Lifeline Network, provides comprehensive free dental treatment to people who are 65 or older, have a disability, or are medically fragile, through volunteer dentists, and it has a long wait but it is genuinely free. Dental school clinics charge roughly a third to half of private prices and the work is supervised by faculty. Federally qualified health centers charge on a sliding scale based on your income and many have dental and vision on site. And since 2022 hearing aids for mild to moderate hearing loss are sold over the counter without a prescription or exam, at a fraction of what a prescription pair costs. Lions Clubs also collect and distribute free eyeglasses locally.
