What is Dollar For?

Dollar For is a national nonprofit that helps people get hospital bills reduced or erased by checking their hospital's charity care policy against their household size and income and then filing the financial assistance application with them, at no cost to the patient.

What this means

  • Dollar For maintains a database of hospital financial assistance policies, so you do not have to hunt for yours.
  • Their online tool asks a few questions and tells you whether you appear to fall inside your hospital's policy.
  • They do not buy or settle debt, and they do not charge a percentage of what they save you.
  • They work on bills that are current and on bills that have already gone to a collection agency.

What to do first

  1. Start at the Dollar For application page and enter your hospital, household size and income.
  2. Have your itemized bill and proof of income ready.
  3. Ask the hospital billing office to pause collections while your application is pending.
  4. If your hospital is for-profit and has no policy, ask the billing office directly about a hardship discount and a payment plan.
