Is there a senior discount on my utility bill?
There is no national senior discount on utility bills, but many states require regulated gas and electric companies to offer a low-income rate or a percentage-of-income plan that many older adults qualify for, and the federal Lifeline program takes about $9.25 a month off a phone or internet bill.
What this means
- The discount is based on income, not on age alone, so a modest Social Security check is usually what qualifies you rather than your birthday.
- These rates go by different names in different states — low-income rate, percentage of income payment plan, or a fixed monthly credit — so ask for all three by description, not by name.
- Getting approved for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) often enrolls you in the discounted rate at the same time, which is why one call can do two jobs.
What to do first
- Call the number on your utility bill and ask: "Do you have a low-income rate or a percentage-of-income payment plan, and how do I apply?"
- Apply for LIHEAP and ask the worker to flag your account for any ongoing rate discount your state offers.
- Check Lifeline for your phone or home internet, which is a separate federal discount you can hold at the same time as a utility rate discount.
- Ask about budget billing, which spreads winter heating costs across all twelve months so no single bill is overwhelming.
LIHEAP Home Energy Assistance
Helps pay heating and cooling bills, and can stop a shut-off in an emergency.
Lifeline Phone and Internet Discount
Takes at least $9.25 a month off a phone or internet bill, more on tribal lands.
Utility Hardship Funds and Senior Shut-Off Protections
Medical baseline rates, winter shut-off protection, hardship grants, and budget billing your utility rarely mentions.
What you'll need
- Your utility account number
- Proof of income for the last 30 days or your benefit award letter
- Proof that you receive a program such as SNAP, SSI, or Medicaid, which often qualifies you automatically
Deadlines and timing
- Most low-income rates must be renewed every year. Watch for a renewal letter — missing it quietly puts you back on the full rate.
Where to go
- Your utility's customer service number, printed on the bill. Ask for the low-income or hardship desk, not general billing.
- Lifeline companies near you: https://www.lifelinesupport.org/companies-near-me/ — you pick a phone or internet company that accepts the discount.
